And now for something completely different. Part one.

Ogors aren’t my bag. Mostly an aesthetic thing here, just not for me. So, naturally enough, they are the first army that two separate people have suggested to me. One, a Beastclaw Raider list, the other a “Funbus”.

I’m not sure that both players will find that bus fun, you know?

I’ll be starting with the simpler list: Beastclaw Raiders

Goal:

Get some big stompy things charging up the battlefield. Back them up with bigger, stompier things. Gotta be fast, gotta be stompy, gotta not be a Gnoblar.

Research:

So Ogors are now split between Gutbusters and Beastclaw Raiders, isn’t that handy? Even handier, the two lists will be one for each faction. They have Thundertusk (shooting option) and Stonehorns (melee option). I mean, I want the Stonehorns but will probably take at least one of each.

Next up, Mawtribe. There’s two potentials here: Boulderhead for Behemoths and Thunderbellies for Mournfangs. Boulderheads makes multiple heroes on big mounts more effective, and Thunderbellies that makes Mournfang viciously fast flankers and helps units near the general charge better.

Boulderhead. It’s got to be the bigger, stompier option for me.

Battalions?

There’s two here that really draw me: Jorlbad and Eurlbad. Both require a Huskard on Stonehorn (the less powerful hero option), 1-3 Stonehorn Beastriders and 2-4 Mournfang packs. Now I hadn’t really looked into the hero option yet, but given that I want these units anyway, it seems like an obvious choice to make. As for which to pick? I honestly don’t know, so let’s start with Eurlbad as it costs more, then I could always try out Jorlbad with the list (without cheating too).

Building the list:

Starting with the battalion then, let’s take in the Huskard on Stonehorn, two small Mournfang packs and the mandatory Stonehorn Beastrider, so with the minimum we have spent just over half our points.

We’ve taken the battalion for its ability, so let’s use it with another two Stonehorn Beastriders to bring the stomp. That gives us four monsters charging down the enemy, but only a smattering of shooting and no magic. Time to shore that up with our remaining points.

One Ironblaster and one Butcher shores up both sides, but leaves us with 100 points left to spend… which can’t be used to supplement any of our units or buy another (except gnoblars and phooey to them). Choices… we could swap out the Butcher for a Firebelly and then add in either another Firebelly or Ironblaster (my choice would be the latter), or use the extra points for endless spells.

I’m going to do the Firebelly and Ironblaster option here to round things off.

The Army:

Huskard on Stonehorn

2x Mournfangs

2x Mournfangs

Stonehorn Beastriders

Stonehorn Beastriders

Stonehorn Beastriders

2x Ironblaster

Firebelly

At just 11 models, this is likely the smallest model count army. Also costs “just” £237.50 from GW direct (note that I have used one Start Collecting box in the purchases to bring the price down).

Pros:

Definitely meets the low model count, and brings four monsters. Ogors have kept the ability to do wounds simply by charging that I remember from 8th Ed, that’s another plus.

Cons:

I don’t want to paint this list. Mostly the Ogors, admittedly, but there is nothing about their design that appeals to me, and while there are four stonehorns in the list, there is no variety to their posing in the kit (as far as I know).

I can safely knock this off the list, if I am going to go with that many stompy monsters, it will be with Dinosaurs.
